1496 March 10th. Christopher Columbus leaves Hispaniola.


1496 March10th. Christopher Columbus leaves Hispaniola for Spain, ending his second visit to the Western Hemisphere . During his time here he has forcibly subjugated the island, enslaved the Amerindians and laid the basis for a system of land grants tied to the Amerindians' labor service.The first indigenous group encountered by Christopher Columbus were the 250,000 Taínos of Hispaniola who were the dominant culture in the Greater Antilles and the Bahamas.In thirty years, about 70% of the Taínos died.
