1513 March 27th. Juan Ponce de Leon becomes the first European definitely known to sight what is now the
territory of the United States (specifically Florida),mistaking it for another island, a Spanish explorer and
conquistador. He became the first Governor of Puerto Rico by appointment of the Spanish crown; and
led the first European expedition to Florida, which he named. He is associated with the legend of the
Fountain of Youth, reputed to be in Florida.
